One of the most difficult things for people who have been successful in sports is adapting to the daily world where you can't get an answer from someone until 5 o'clock tomorrow. There is always an excuse. Living 40 or 50 years like that doesn't get too exciting after a while.

Tennis is not like other sports where the coach is hired by an independent entity and that makes a huge difference in the dynamic.

When I was in Birmingham I used to go to a place called Redwood Field. I used to get there for a two o'clock game. Where can you make this kind of money playing sports? It was just a pleasure to go out and enjoy myself and get paid for it.

I had no interest in sports so I didn't make friends in that traditional way where kids are in public school and they go and they join clubs and play sports. So I kind of had to find my own way to make friends and get attention and so I just was the class clown.

I don't think there's anything that is a greater area of discrimination against women today than the fact that nowhere in the world is there a female role model in team sports that more than half of a general audience would recognize.

Where I came from sports were the only way to get out front.

We live in a world where sports have the potential to bridge the gap between racism sexism and discrimination. The 2012 Olympic Games was a great start but hopefully what these games taught us is that if women are given an opportunity on an equal playing field the possibilities for women are endless.

It sounds like a cliche but it... you do sing about what you know about. And I grew up in a small town and I grew up in a place where your whole world revolved around friends family school and church and sports.

Sports and entertainment are the only places where inner-city kids see themselves being able to succeed. Their intellectual development is something they don't relate to.

When you look at golf films before us they're all - garbage or satire. A lot of sports films tend to vilify the opposition. Where the opposition becomes this big angry monster so big you can't beat him.

The idea is we're still a society where we recognize and see and even sometimes seek members of our own tribe whatever that tribe is. It could be ethnic religious geographic political.

You forget that you do choose your life and there are so many things to be grateful for and I feel like society has gotten to that point where we're always looking for the next and the better and we lose sight of what's actually in front of us.

We're in a period where society seems very attracted to flash and that seeps into people's musical taste.

Sometimes nudity is gratuitous. We just live in a society where everything goes.

I'm really not interested in other people's opinions because I think frankly most of those opinions are either misinformed and adding to this endless ball of hot air we have in our society where everyone thinks their opinion is valuable and sacred and what counts.

When you look at where the real problems are among minorities in our society particularly blacks it's at the bottom. It's the people who are in school systems that don't educate neighborhoods where there is a lot of crime drugs the whole bit.

A society in which there are high levels of voluntary activity will simply be a better happier place than one where there are not.

You can't have a United States if you are telling some folks that they can't get on the train. There is a cracking point where a society collapses.
