More than 20 years on sustained competition informed customers and the rapid growth of new technology provide the necessary environment for substantial deregulation.
Deregulation created this epidemic of greed which according to the rules of capitalism was OK. Beyond that there was criminal behaviour. There have been no repercussions and it's hard to make your peace with.
Is human nature basically good or evil? No economist can embark upon his profession without considering this question and yet they all seem to. And they all seem to think human nature is basically good or they wouldn't be surprised by the effects of deregulation.
On every front there are clear answers out there that can make this country stronger but we're going to break through the fear and the frustration people are feeling. Our job is to make sure that even as we make progress that we are also giving people a sense of hope and vision for the future.
