Like all young reporters - brilliant or hopelessly incompetent - I dreamed of the glamorous life of the foreign correspondent: prowling Vienna in a Burberry trench coat speaking a dozen languages to dangerous women narrowly escaping Sardinian bandits - the usual stuff that newspaper dreams are made of.
I can't bear art that you can walk round and admire. A book should be either a bandit or a rebel or a man in the crowd.
It is education that will arm us with the tools that will enable us to succeed and put a stop to the rising rates of preventable death.
