Americans have always had an ambivalent attitude toward intelligence. When they feel threatened they want a lot of it and when they don't they regard the whole thing as somewhat immoral.
If you do not feel yourself growing in your work and your life broadening and deepening if your task is not a perpetual tonic to you you have not found your place.
