I certainly can't speak for all cultures or all societies but it's clear that in America poetry serves a very marginal purpose. It's not part of the cultural mainstream.
A great many people seem to think writing poetry is worthwhile even though...
I write poetry in order to live more fully.
This then is the test we must set for ourselves not to march alone but to march in such a way that others will wish to join us.
